Moreover because sinus anatomy can vary greatly and even extend into the first premolar and even canine region, clinicians who place implants in the maxilla must be proficient with sinus augmentation. Although crestal sinus lifts are becoming very popular, lateral approach sinus grafts are still the gold standard of care. Learning how to diagnose, plan and avoid complications is as important as carrying out the procedure. When carried out correctly, clinicians can ensure adequate length and widths of implants are installed in ideal geometries to ensure resistance to masticatory forces.
