Current literature shows between 70- 90% of dental implant procedures are accompanied with some form of bone grafting protocol. To ensure ideal implant position and long term health the use of bone grafting protocols either prior to or at the time of implant placement is a requirement. There are numerous bone grafting procedures that can be carried out in dental implantology, many of which are highly predictable and are associated with long term success. Two of these procedures include Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and the Split Bone Block (SBB) techniques. GBR is one of the most popular procedures carried out in implant dentistry, is straight forward to carry out (horizontal) and extremely predictable. However it can not be utilised in all cases. The Split Bone Block offers patients an autologous option which produces one of the most stable and high quality bone regenerate. However, the protocol is technique sensitive and requires several important steps to ensure predictability and quality of the graft regenerate.
